Three stoves worth buying, compared on the specifications their makers actually publish - plus the fuel arithmetic that decides whether you should be running 1 lb canisters at all.

This page is for people who have already decided on two burners. It compares the two-burner propane stoves head to head and nothing else. If you are still choosing between formats - a single canister burner for solo trips, a wood stove for a hot tent, or an induction hob off a power station - start with other stove formats, including canister and wood instead.

Three stoves are worth your money here, and they separate cleanly. The Camp Chef Everest 2X ($229.99) has the highest output at 20,000 BTU per burner and the only independent wind result of the three. The Coleman Cascade 222 ($219.99) is the value pick with a 3-year warranty and an explicit simmer claim. The GSI Selkirk 540+ ($179.95) is the cheapest, the narrowest, and the only one with a lifetime warranty - at the cost of a smaller cooking surface.

Two conflicts in that table that we could not resolve, so we are naming them. GSI's own page states 10,000 BTU/h (CSA) or 11,790 BTU/h (CE) per burner for the Selkirk 540+, while every retailer lists 14,000 BTU/h. The string "14,000" does not appear anywhere on GSI's page. We have published GSI's figure because it is the manufacturer's, but we cannot tell you which is right. Separately, Coleman's specification field gives the Cascade 222 at 13.05 lb while Coleman Consumer Care answered a customer question on the same page with 14.2 lb - the manufacturer contradicts itself and we could not establish which is current.

Wind is the spec that decides satisfaction

It is also the one no manufacturer quantifies. Every stove page says its windscreen works; none publishes a figure, because there is no standard test to publish. So this section is about what we can actually establish, which is a design difference and one set of independent scores.

What the makers built. Camp Chef's approach is structural: the folding lid forms a three-sided windscreen, so the shelter is the stove body rather than a bolt-on. Coleman fits two separate wind guards, which are listed as removable items in the box. GSI's wraparound screens are explicitly designed to "fold out of the way for use with larger pots on calm days," which is a useful feature and an admission that they are in the way the rest of the time.

What OutdoorGearLab found. They tested the Camp Chef Everest 2X and scored it 8.5 out of 10 for wind resistance, describing "a nearly seamless windscreen" and crediting "a more protected burner layout that tucks the flame deeper into the stove body, reducing direct wind exposure compared to fully open designs." They named it their best overall camping stove at 83 out of 100. Their listed criticism is that the closures are not durable.

What nobody has established. OutdoorGearLab's lineup does not include the Cascade 222 or the Selkirk 540+, so there is no comparable wind result for either. Be careful with substitutes here: they did test the Coleman Cascade Classic (5.8 out of 10, "low wind resistance") and the Cascade 3-in-1 (6.5, with "thin wind guards" as a listed criticism), and those are different models from the 222. Treating a sibling's score as this stove's score would be exactly the kind of shortcut that makes stove roundups useless.

Why BTU is not the number you want

BTU per hour measures maximum fuel input. It does not measure heat delivered into your pan, and it says nothing at all about the bottom of the range, which is where most camp cooking goes wrong. A stove that only knows how to roar will burn onions, scorch sauce, and boil a pot dry while you are setting up the tent.

What to look for instead is the valve. Two of the three makers describe theirs specifically: Coleman claims "improved knob rotation for precise temperature and simmer control," and GSI claims "individual, micro-control valves" giving "everything from slow simmering to full-strength, fast boiling." Camp Chef makes no simmer claim for the Everest 2X - the nearest thing on their page is "appliance-style temperature controls," which describes the knobs rather than the range.

Interestingly, that is the one place where independent testing rates a stove above its own marketing: OutdoorGearLab scored the Everest 2X 9.0 out of 10 for simmering, called the performance excellent, and noted that it is uncommon for a car-camping stove to boil fast and still cook low and slow. Again, their finding on one stove, not a comparison across all three.

Fit: what these actually measure against a real surface

Here is something the spec sheets hide by being published separately. Put the three side by side and depth is effectively identical - 12.9 in, 13 in, and 13.2 in. There is no meaningful choice to make on depth in this category. Width is the entire variable, and it spans 21.4 in to 24 in.

  • GSI Selkirk 540+, 21.4 x 12.9 x 3.8 in. The narrowest and the slimmest closed. Also the smallest cooking surface: GSI states it fits 8 in and 10 in pots side by side, which is one size down from the others.
  • Coleman Cascade 222, 22 x 13.2 x 3.7 in. The only one of the three whose figure is confirmed as the closed dimension, which Coleman's own customer-service answer states explicitly. Fits one 10 in and one 12 in pan.
  • Camp Chef Everest 2X, 24 x 13 x 6 in. Widest and by far the tallest closed, at 6 in against under 4 in for the other two. 215 sq in of cooking area, the largest here.

Two practical consequences. That 6-inch closed height is what will stop the Camp Chef sliding into a shallow drawer that takes the other two comfortably, so measure the drawer clearance and not just its footprint. And because Camp Chef and GSI both publish a single unlabelled dimension set, you cannot be certain those are closed figures - if a fit is marginal, measure the stove in the shop rather than trusting the table above, including ours.

The fuel arithmetic, which is worth more than the stove choice

This is the section that should change what you buy, and it has nothing to do with which stove wins. Almost everyone runs these on green 1 lb disposable cylinders, because that is what is stocked next to the stove in the shop. It is the most expensive propane you can buy.

Every step, so you can check it:

  1. Propane carries 21,548 BTU per pound after vaporization, published by the Propane Education & Research Council. The EIA publishes propane energy content per gallon only, which is why we use PERC for this.
  2. A 2-pack of 16 oz Coleman cylinders was $10.99 at Target on 13 August 2026, so $5.50 per pound.
  3. A Blue Rhino 20 lb exchange was $23.99 at Ace Hardware the same day. But an exchange tank is not a full tank: AmeriGas states on its own support page that its grill tanks contain a net 15 lb of propane. That makes the real cost about $1.60 per pound, not $1.20.
  4. So canister propane costs roughly 3.4 times as much per pound. Run one burner at 20,000 BTU/hr for 20 hours across a season and you burn about 400,000 BTU: about 18.6 cylinders and $102, against roughly $30 from a tank.

Two honest caveats on that. The tank route needs a high-pressure hose, and we have not verified a current price for one, so treat it as a one-off cost we cannot quantify here. And the 80 percent fill rule is why a "20 lb" tank holds 20 lb rather than more - propane containers are filled to 80 percent of capacity to leave room for the liquid to expand, which the Oklahoma LP Gas Administration states directly and OSHA backs with a filling-density limit. What is less well known is that an exchange tank is filled to less again.

On compatibility, be careful. Coleman Consumer Care has stated that any of their two-burner stoves will run from a 20 lb bottle using Coleman's high-pressure hose 2000038196, but that is a customer-service answer on a different product's page, not a published specification. Camp Chef publishes nothing beyond including a 1 lb cylinder adaptor, and GSI publishes nothing about cylinder size at all. Ask the maker before you buy a hose.

While you are planning fuel, it is worth planning what you cook: planning meals that do not need a fridge changes how much stove time you actually need.

Why there are no boil times on this page

Every competing page in this category leads with them, so their absence is worth explaining rather than hiding. We have not cooked on these stoves. Publishing a boil time we did not measure would be inventing data, and the honest alternative - quoting somebody else's - runs into a problem worth knowing about.

OutdoorGearLab did measure the Camp Chef Everest 2X, and their own two pages publish two different sets of figures for the same stove. That is not sloppiness; it is what happens when you measure a boil time twice, because the result moves with altitude, starting water temperature, ambient air, pot material, and lid fit. A single boil time quoted out of that context is close to meaningless, which is why we would rather point you at OutdoorGearLab's testing than reprint one number from it. Our methodology sets a three-cook minimum with logged fuel before we publish times of our own.

What goes wrong, according to owners

Aggregated owner-report patterns from car-camping forums, not failures we have observed. Treat them as patterns rather than as failure rates.

  • The regulator fails before the stove does. The most-reported failure on cheap two-burners is a regulator that will not seat or will not seal on a new cylinder, usually after a season of being packed damp. It is also the cheapest part to replace, which is worth knowing before writing off a stove.
  • Piezo and matchless igniters fail in the cold and in damp, and they fail early relative to the rest of the stove. Every one of these three has matchless ignition; carry a lighter anyway and treat the igniter as a convenience.
  • Grates warp under a heavy cast-iron pan on the lighter-gauge stoves. GSI is the only maker of the three publishing a pot-support gauge - 4 mm nickel-chrome-plated steel - which is the sort of detail that suggests they expect to be asked.
  • Wind guards get left behind. Coleman's are removable, which is convenient right up to the trip where they are still on the kitchen table at home. The Camp Chef's lid cannot be lost this way, which is an underrated argument for a built-in screen.

Which one to buy

Buy the Camp Chef Everest 2X if you cook for three or more, you camp somewhere exposed, and you want the one stove here with independent evidence behind its wind and simmer performance. It is the widest and the tallest closed, so check your drawer first.

Buy the Coleman Cascade 222 if you want the longest practical warranty at this price and an explicit simmer claim, and you are content with 22,000 BTU total. Check stock before you plan around it - the entire Cascade line showed out of stock on Coleman's own site when we looked.

Buy the GSI Selkirk 540+ if it is going in a drawer, if you cook for two, or if a lifetime warranty is worth more to you than cooking area. Accept that its BTU rating is genuinely unclear and that GSI publishes no weight.

Which two-burner stove works best in wind?
On the only independent testing we could find, the Camp Chef Everest 2X. OutdoorGearLab scored it 8.5 out of 10 for wind resistance, describing a nearly seamless windscreen and a burner layout that tucks the flame deeper into the stove body. That is their finding, not ours. They have not tested the Coleman Cascade 222 or the GSI Selkirk 540+, so there is no comparable result for either - what we can tell you is the design difference: the Camp Chef's own folding lid forms three sides of shelter, Coleman uses two removable wind guards, and GSI's wraparound screens are designed to fold out of the way, which helps with big pots and not with wind.
Is high BTU worth paying for?
Less than the number suggests, and it is the wrong spec to shop on. BTU is a measure of maximum fuel input, not of heat delivered to your pan, and it tells you nothing about the two things that actually decide whether cooking at camp is pleasant: whether the flame survives a breeze, and whether the valve will hold a low, steady output. A 40,000 BTU stove with the flame blown sideways cooks worse than a 20,000 BTU one that is properly sheltered. Read the wind and simmer sections before the BTU column.
Can I simmer on it, or does it only boil?
Two of the three make an explicit claim and one does not. Coleman states 'precise temperature and simmer control' for the Cascade 222, and GSI states that individual micro-control valves handle 'everything from slow simmering to full-strength, fast boiling' on the Selkirk 540+. Camp Chef makes no simmer claim for the Everest 2X at all - the closest phrasing on their page is 'appliance-style temperature controls.' Independently, OutdoorGearLab scored the Everest 2X 9.0 out of 10 for simmering ability and called it excellent, which is a case of a tester rating something better than the manufacturer claims.
Will it fit on my tailgate or in a drawer?
All three are within about half an inch of each other on depth - 12.9 to 13.2 inches - so depth is effectively settled across the category and width is where they differ. The GSI Selkirk 540+ is the narrowest at 21.4 in, the Coleman Cascade 222 is 22 in closed, and the Camp Chef Everest 2X is the widest at 24 in. That 2.6-inch spread is what decides a drawer fit. Note that only Coleman confirms its figure is the closed dimension; Camp Chef and GSI publish one unlabelled set each.

What is the difference between the Camp Chef Everest and the cheaper Coleman?
About $10 at list, and three real differences. The Camp Chef publishes 20,000 BTU per burner against Coleman's 22,000 total, so the Camp Chef is close to twice the maximum output. Coleman gives you a 3-year warranty against Camp Chef's 1 year, and Coleman makes an explicit simmer claim where Camp Chef makes none. The Camp Chef is the wider unit at 24 in and the lighter one at 12 lb. If you want maximum output and independent evidence of wind performance, the Camp Chef has it; if you want a longer warranty for less money, Coleman does.
Why does this page not list boil times?
Because we have not boiled anything on these stoves. OutdoorGearLab has, for the Camp Chef, and even there their two pages publish two different sets of figures for the same stove, which is a good illustration of how sensitive a boil test is to conditions. Rather than reproduce a number we did not measure, or pick between two of someone else's that disagree, we have left boil times off entirely.

How we wrote this

A synthesis guide, not a hands-on review

This page publishes no boil times, no measured BTU, and no wind-tunnel result, because we have not cooked on any of these stoves. Where independent testing exists we cite it as the tester's work: OutdoorGearLab has run the Camp Chef Everest 2X and their wind and simmer scores are attributed to them, and they have not tested the other two stoves here, so those columns carry no performance claim at all. Every specification is the manufacturer's own published figure, cited and dated, and where a maker publishes nothing we say 'not published' rather than borrowing a retailer's number. What is original here is arithmetic: the fuel-cost section is calculated from a published propane energy content and two live retail prices, and every step is shown so you can check it.
