Two numbers control whether a rooftop tent is even an option. The roof's dynamic load rating is what it can carry while moving and is published in the vehicle owner's manual. The rack's static load is what it can support while parked, with sleepers inside, and is published by the rack manufacturer rather than the carmaker. Yakima and Thule both list separate static figures for most of their bar systems and they typically run three to five times the dynamic figure.

The math itself is simple. Add tent weight, mattress and bedding weight, and the heaviest two sleepers you will ever put up there. That total has to fit under the static rating of the rack and crossbars. Tent plus bedding alone has to fit under the dynamic rating while you drive.
