Underplanning water is one of the most common car-camping mistakes - and one of the easiest to avoid with a few minutes of math before the trip. Use the calculator below for a quick number, then refine with the per-use breakdown.

What the calculator is doing

The numbers come from federal and sports-medicine guidance, scaled conservatively for car-camping conditions. Here is the breakdown per person, per day:

The "personal wash" row above assumes a rinse at a jug, not a shower. If you plan to shower, budget that separately and generously: a camp shower head at a published 0.6 gallons per minute uses about 3.4 litres for a 90-second rinse and 9 litres if you leave the water running for four minutes, so two people showering daily can easily exceed the drinking water for the whole trip. Containers

For most car-camping trips, two 5-7 L stackable jugs plus one reusable bottle per person is the right starting setup. Jerry cans are useful for longer trips but heavy and awkward at full size. Bladders are great for hikes but not great for vehicle storage.

Refill plans for longer trips

Carrying more than 40 L for a trip is heavy and inefficient. Plan a refill instead. The three reliable refill sources are: (1) potable spigots at developed campgrounds, (2) towns and gas stations near the route, and (3) treated water from a creek, lake, or spring. The third only works with proper treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should I bring per person per day?
A conservative car-camping planning number is 4 liters per person per day in moderate weather and 6-8 liters in hot weather or on active days. That covers drinking (the largest portion), cooking, dish rinse, and basic personal wash. Use the calculator above for a specific trip.
Is the water at developed campgrounds safe to drink?
Usually yes if the spigot is marked 'potable' or 'drinking water'. US Forest Service and National Park Service campgrounds test water at official spigots; private campgrounds vary. Spigots labeled 'non-potable' or unlabeled spigots near restrooms and dump stations should not be used for drinking without treatment.
Can I refill from a creek or lake?
Only after treating it. The CDC recommends one of four methods: boiling for 1 minute (3 minutes above 6,500 ft), filtering with a rated filter, treating with chlorine dioxide tablets, or using a UV pen. Untreated surface water carries giardia, cryptosporidium, and other pathogens that filtration alone may miss - chemical or UV treatment is the conservative add-on.
How heavy is camping water?
1 liter weighs about 1 kg (2.2 lb). A 5 L jug weighs 5 kg (11 lb). A 20 L jerry can weighs 20 kg (44 lb) when full, which is at the upper limit of comfortable single-person lifting. For trips needing more than 40 L, plan to split it across multiple smaller containers or a partner-carry routine.
What is the cheapest reliable water setup for car camping?
Two 5-7 L stackable jugs filled with municipal water from home, plus one reusable bottle per person. Total cost is about $25-40 and covers a weekend for two people. Add a 1 L filter (Sawyer Squeeze) for $40 as backup if a refill becomes necessary mid-trip.
