Reviewed Aug 13, 2026The shower is the easy part. What decides whether washing at camp works is how much water you have and whether you can heat it, and those two questions have arithmetic answers. A camp shower head at a published 0.6 gallons per minute uses 3.4 litres for a 90-second rinse - so a 20 litre reservoir is about five showers. Heating three litres electrically costs 60 to 100 watt-hours, a real line in a power budget. Doing it on propane costs about a tenth of a pound of gas, which is nothing. Work out which of those you can afford and the product choice follows.
How far 20 litres actually goes
This is the table to read before looking at any product. The rates are published figures except where noted; the litres columns are multiplication you can check. The 90-second column assumes what the water agencies call a navy shower - wet down, water off while you soap, water on to rinse.

Three things fall out of that table, and the third is the one that saves money.
- A camp head is roughly a third of a household one. EPA caps a WaterSense showerhead at 2.0 gallons per minute and puts a standard head at 2.5. Mr. Heater's camp head is 0.6. That is the difference between a four-minute rinse costing 30 litres and costing 9.
- Running a propane heater at its rated output erases the saving. The Camplux's published 1.32 GPM is more than double the Mr. Heater figure, so four minutes at full flow is your entire 20 litre reservoir in one shower. Hot water and water discipline pull in opposite directions.
- Turning the tap off is worth more than any product decision on this page. At the same 0.6 GPM head, going from four minutes continuous to 90 seconds of actual water takes you from two rinses out of 20 litres to five. No purchase you can make competes with that.
One caveat on the honesty of these figures: we could not find a gallon figure for a navy shower published by any named authority. Every "three gallons" claim we chased traced back to a blog or a vendor. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources describes it as water running "less than a minute," which is a duration, so the litre figures above are our multiplication of a published rate by a stated time, not a number anyone official has stood behind.

What heating a shower actually costs
Cold showers work in July and are miserable in October, so heat is what most people are really shopping for. There are three ways to get it and they bill you in three different currencies.
Solar: free, and nobody will tell you how well it works
A black bag in the sun. Sea to Summit's claim is characteristically vague and characteristically honest: the fabric "soaks up the sun during the day at base camp for an eight-ish minute warm shower." Advanced Elements describes "efficient 4-layer construction for optimal heat retention" and instructs you to lay it out clear side up.
Neither publishes a heat-up time or a resulting temperature. The "110 degrees in three hours" figure that circulates for the Advanced Elements bag appears on retailer listings and marketplace pages, and on none of the pages the brand controls, so we are not repeating it as a specification. Plan on solar being reliable in summer at a site you occupy all afternoon, and unreliable everywhere else.
12 V: 60 to 100 watt-hours per shower
Geyser is the only maker here publishing enough numbers to budget from, and the numbers are worth knowing before you buy:
- Heats to 99-108 F, at a published rate of 0.8 F per minute.
- From very cold water, Geyser's own FAQ says it "may take up to 70 minutes to fully heat."
- Heater draw 9.8 A; pump draw 2.5-3.1 A, which they gloss as 24-36 W.
- Stated consumption: 60-100 watt-hours per heat cycle.
Put that against a camping power budget and it is significant rather than trivial. Two heated showers a day at the top of the range is 200 Wh, which is around 40 percent of the daily draw of a 60 litre compressor fridge. If you are running a fridge and a fan already, adding daily hot showers is the kind of load that moves you up a capacity tier. add a shower to your own power budget before deciding, because the answer depends on what else is on the battery.
One warning about the specification. Geyser's FAQ says a "500 W power station" supports "5+ heat cycles" - but 500 W is an output rating and heat cycles consume watt-hours, which is a different unit. Take the 60-100 Wh figure and your own station's watt-hour capacity, and do that division yourself rather than trusting the 5-cycle claim.
Propane: hot in eight seconds, and the fuel is nearly free
An on-demand propane heater is the only format that produces genuinely hot water on demand rather than warm water eventually. The Camplux AY132 publishes a 34,000 BTU per hour maximum, a 10-65 C output range, and hot water "within 8 seconds."
The fuel arithmetic is more favourable than people expect:
- At the rated 34,000 BTU/hr, a four-minute shower consumes about 2,267 BTU.
- Propane carries 21,548 BTU per pound, so that is roughly 0.105 lb per shower.
- An exchange tank holds a net 15 lb rather than the 20 lb on the label, which works out to roughly 140 showers from one tank.
Where our arithmetic disagrees with Camplux. Their US page states both "over 15h run time on a single gas tank" and, in the FAQ on the same page, "16 hours of continuous use" from a 20 lb bottle. Working from their own BTU rating, a genuinely full 20 lb tank holds 430,960 BTU, which at 34,000 BTU/hr is about 12.7 hours - and the exchange tank most people actually buy holds about 15 lb, or about 9.5 hours. Their figure is only reachable well below rated output. That is not a fatal criticism, since nobody runs a shower at full flow for 15 hours, but a run-time claim that assumes part load ought to say so. The same page also carries three different flow figures - 1.32 GPM, "2.5-6 LPM (0.6-1.6 GPM)," and "up to 6 litres per min" - so treat its numbers with care generally.

Which one to buy
Warm weather, minimum fuss: Sea to Summit Pocket Shower
10 litres, 120 g packed, packing down to about 6 by 6 by 26 cm, at $44.95. Sea to Summit publishes an eight-minute shower with the head fully open, which on our arithmetic is around 1.25 litres per minute - the gentlest rate here, and enough for two disciplined rinses per fill. There is no hose: the head is built into the base, and a six-metre cord is included for hanging it.
It is the right answer for most people because it costs nothing in weight, space or power, and it fails in exactly one predictable way: it needs sun and a hang point.
More water for a family: Advanced Elements 5 Gallon Summer Shower
18.9 litres for $35.99, which is nearly twice the water of the Pocket Shower for less money - the trade being weight when full and the fact that the manufacturer publishes almost nothing about it. No flow rate, no heat-up time, no temperature claim, no packed size, no weight and no hose length appear on the only first-party page we could find, and the brand's own domain now redirects to a parent-company homepage. Buy it as a bigger bag, not on the strength of the heating claims you will read elsewhere.
Pressure without a battery: NEMO Helio
11 litres, foot-pumped, with a seven-foot hose so the tank sits on the ground rather than over your head - which is the practical advantage, since there is nothing to hang and nothing to lift full. NEMO publishes "5-7 minutes of continuous, steady spraying power" per fill, at $159.95. No heating: fill it with hot water or leave the black tank in the sun.
Rinsing gear rather than washing people: RinseKit PRO
3.5 gallons at a published 50 PSI continuous, from a 12 V 5 Ah AGM battery, at $189.95. This is the pressure-washer end of the category - the spray times published per nozzle range from 4:30 on the jet to 22:00 on the mist. It is 13 lb empty and 42 lb full, which is the number to think about before buying, because that is a two-hand lift into a vehicle.
Two caveats. RinseKit does not publish a hose length or the pump's power consumption, and their page contradicts itself on the centre-nozzle spray time - a feature bullet says 6:30 while the specification block on the same page says 7:30. Heating is a separate purchase.
A van with a house battery: Geyser System
The only unit here that heats water itself from 12 V, and the one whose numbers are published properly enough to plan around: 99-108 F, 0.8 F per minute, 60-100 Wh per heat cycle, a 5 ft hose and a 16 ft power lead. It is 7.9 lb empty and 14.6 lb full, so it is a one-hand lift.
Understand what you are buying: 3 litres over a stated 15 minutes is around 0.2 litres per minute on our arithmetic, which is a heated wipe-down with a sponge rather than a rinse shower. That is a genuine strength in a van, where water and power are both scarce, and a genuine weakness after a day at the beach. Geyser also offers a no-heater route worth knowing: 2 L cold plus 1 L boiling gives a hot shower in three minutes with no electrical heating at all.
On price, $319.99 was shown when we checked, but the page carries four variants - standard, heated, and refurbished versions of each - and we could not confirm which the displayed price belongs to. Check before ordering.
Genuinely hot water: Camplux AY132
1.32 GPM at a 25 K temperature rise, 34,000 BTU/hr, hot within 8 seconds, 10 lb, at $159.99. It needs a propane supply, two D-cells for ignition, and 3.0 PSI of water pressure to start, which means a pump or a gravity head - it does not draw from a bucket on its own.
This is the format for cold-weather trips, groups, and anywhere the water source itself is cold. Read the propane section above before relying on the published run time, and note that the US page does not publish a hose length or its packed dimensions.
Where you can legally shower, and what happens to the water
This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the part that carries an actual rule behind it. The distance is consistent across every authority we checked: 200 feet from any lake, stream, or water source.
- Leave No Trace: "carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater." Rinse from a pot or jug, which "allows the soil to act as a filter."
- National Park Service sets this per park rather than service-wide. Isle Royale is explicit about bathing specifically: "Conduct bathing on land at least 200 feet (75 steps) away from water sources or campsites. Rinse water can be carried in collapsible containers or pots." Channel Islands says to scatter grey water 200 ft from water sources and camps.
- Forest Service does not publish its own washing distance and defers to Leave No Trace, while directing trailer grey water to dump stations.
- BLM gives 200 feet as a recommendation rather than a rule, and tells you to verify locally - which matters, because local rules can be stricter.
One distinction worth carrying: scattering strained grey water on the ground away from water is affirmatively endorsed by Leave No Trace, the BLM's own guidance, and both park sources above. Emptying a holding tank is a different act and is treated differently - the Forest Service points trailer grey water at dump stations, and BLM field offices can prohibit tank disposal outright by local supplementary rule, which several Colorado field offices have done. If your setup catches water in a tank rather than letting it soak away, find a dump station.
Showering is one half of the camp hygiene problem and the more pleasant half. the toilet side of the same problem covers portable toilets, cathole rules, and pack-out systems, and the two decisions interact more than you would expect - a privacy shelter that works for one usually works for both.
Privacy shelters, and when you do not need one
Buy this last, if at all. At a developed campground an open tailgate with the doors out, or a tarp off an awning, does most of what a shelter does. The case for buying one is exposure, children, or wanting the same enclosure to serve as a toilet space.
- WolfWise pop-up, $59.99. 44.5 x 44.5 in floor, 74.8 in tall, folds to 23 by 23 in, 5.5 lb. 190T polyester with a water-repellent treatment, a built-in floor mat with mesh for drainage, and vents on three sides. WolfWise does not publish a hydrostatic head or a pole material.
- NEMO Heliopolis, $249.95. A larger 48 x 48 in floor with 84 in of peak height, a hose pass-through and an overhead nozzle mount so you can shower hands-free with a Helio. It showed sold out when we checked, and its specification table would not render on the live page - the dimensions above come from cached renderings of the same URL, so treat them as one confidence level below the price.

What goes wrong
- Mildew, which is what actually kills these products. A shower bag packed damp grows mould inside where you cannot scrub it, and no manufacturer publishes a cleaning protocol. Dry it fully inverted before it goes in the bin with everything else.
- Freezing splits pumps and heaters. Anything with a pump body or a heat exchanger holds residual water after use. Below freezing that water expands and cracks the housing, which is a failure mode that no warranty treats kindly. Drain completely for shoulder-season trips.
- Full weight, not empty weight. The RinseKit PRO is 13 lb empty and 42 lb full; a 5 gallon bag is about 42 lb of water alone. Hanging one overhead is a genuine lift, which is the strongest practical argument for a pumped unit that sits on the ground.
- The privacy tent that never comes out of the bag. The most common regret in this category, and the reason to treat the shelter as a separate decision made after a few trips rather than part of the same purchase.

We have not used any of these showers. Nothing here reports a measured flow rate, a measured water temperature, or a durability result, because producing those would need the products and a season with them. Every product figure is the manufacturer's own published specification, cited and dated, and where a maker publishes nothing - Advanced Elements publishes no flow rate, no heat-up time and no packed size - the entry says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number. Only two of the products here publish a flow rate at all; where we convert a capacity and a stated duration into litres per minute, both inputs come from the same manufacturer's page and the derivation is labelled as ours. What is original is the arithmetic: how far a 20 litre reservoir goes at each published rate, what a heated shower costs in watt-hours, and what one costs in propane - including where that arithmetic disagrees with a manufacturer's own run-time claim.
