Two numbers decide whether you can sleep in a vehicle: the flat length available with the seats folded or the tailgate up, and the width between the wheel wells. Everything else is preference. The honest rule is that you need roughly your own height plus two inches, which means 72 inches for a 5 ft 10 in person and 76 inches for someone 6 ft 2 in. Below that, you are sleeping diagonally, curled, or building something.

The gaps in that table are the finding, not a failure of research. Toyota, Honda, Jeep, and GM publish cargo volume in cubic feet and leave the SAE-coded length field empty. Two independent publications say the same thing about why that data is weak: Cars.com notes that specifications are "almost without exception manufacturer-supplied" and that "the automotive industry relies heavily on self-reporting and self-certification," and declines to publish a maximum cargo figure at all because it has no method it considers reliable. Car and Driver says manufacturer numbers "can vary depending on which version of that standard the automaker is measuring to," which is why they physically load carry-on boxes instead.

Trucks: bed length at the floor

Truck data is the opposite situation: every bed length is published, by the manufacturer, for every configuration. The threshold here is 74 inches, which covers a 6 ft sleeper with clearance.

One unresolved discrepancy. Ford's own technical specification document gives 78.9 in at the floor for the F-150's 6.5 ft Styleside box; Car and Driver's 2025 entry gives 78 in for the same box. We have used Ford's figure and are flagging the difference rather than quietly picking one. The Ford document is also dated model year 2021 - the numbers are carried forward unchanged on current dealer pages, but we could not find a 2025-dated, Ford-hosted sheet. The Tacoma and Tundra figures come from Toyota Canada product documents, because we could not find equivalent US-hosted Toyota documents; the inch figures match the US data exactly.

What "cargo length" actually measures

This is the part that decides whether the table above helps you or misleads you, and it is defined in a standard almost nobody reads. SAE J1100 sets out dimension code L202, "Cargo Length at Floor":

"Measured at the height of the cargo floor surface. The longitudinal distance from the back of the seatback, seat riser, or other limiting surface to the rearmost point of the closed tailgate or tail door at vehicle centerline."

"If there is an obstruction, such as that caused by a second row seat being folded up to the rear of the front seat, the measurement is taken from the most rearward surface of the limiting obstruction."

Three consequences follow, and all three make the real number smaller than the published one:

  • It is measured at floor height only. A folded seatback that sits four inches above the cargo floor still satisfies the standard at the floor line, while making the flat surface you can actually lie on materially shorter. This is the single biggest reason a vehicle that "should" fit does not.
  • It is measured at the vehicle centerline. Off the centerline the length can be shorter, and in most SUVs it is, because the rear wheel arches and the tapering hatch aperture both intrude.
  • It assumes the front seats are in their standard position. Sliding them forward genuinely buys you length, which is why the figure is a ceiling in one direction and a floor in another.

SAE itself states that the derived volume figures "do not yield actual cargo volumes." Consumer Reports reaches the same conclusion from the other end, measuring the largest rigid box that actually fits and noting that manufacturer totals include space that does not accommodate real objects.

Measure your own vehicle in five minutes

This is more reliable than any table, including ours, and it is the only way to get a number for the seven SUVs above that publish nothing. You need a tape measure and the seats in the position you would actually sleep in.

  1. Fold the seats and put the front seats where you would leave them overnight. Not all the way forward unless you would genuinely drive that way to camp with them there.
  2. Lay a rigid board or a broom handle along the centerline, resting on the highest points. This is the step everybody skips, and it is the one that reveals the truth: the board sits on the folded seatback and the load-floor lip, and the flat plane you can sleep on is at that height, not at floor height.
  3. Measure the length of the board that is supported, from the seatback to the closed hatch. That is your real sleeping length.
  4. Measure the width at the narrowest point, which is almost always between the rear wheel arches.
  5. Measure the height from the board to the lowest point of the ceiling. A four-inch pad plus a person plus a duvet consumes more of a hatchback than people expect.

Then compare your real number to your height plus two inches, and to your partner's. If it clears, you are done; how to actually sleep comfortably once you've picked one covers the rest of the system.

Four things the spec sheet will not tell you

  • Wheel-well intrusion. The width figure most manufacturers publish, where they publish one, is measured at the beltline rather than at the floor. The Outback's 45.2 in cargo width and its 43.3 in between the wheelhousings are two different numbers describing two different heights, and only the second one governs where your shoulders go.
  • Seat-fold angle. "Fold-flat" describes what the seat does, not whether the result is level with the cargo deck. We could not find a single manufacturer claiming the folded floor is flush. Most rear seatbacks fold to a slight downward slope toward the front of the vehicle, which you will discover at about 2 a.m. when your head is lower than your feet.
  • Tailgate overhang. On a truck, dropping the tailgate adds roughly 18 to 20 inches, and it is the standard fix for a short bed - but it is unsupported at the hinge line, it is open to weather, and it means your legs are outside the vehicle.
  • Window shape. Nothing in the specification tells you how hard the glass will be to cover, and covering it is what decides privacy, light, and how much condensation you wake up to. Deeply curved rear quarter windows are the ones that defeat cut-to-shape panels.

Trucks versus SUVs: the actual tradeoff

The table makes trucks look like the obvious answer, and on length alone they are. The tradeoff is everything else.

A truck bed gives you length and separation. Even a mid-size 6 ft bed beats every SUV in the table except the Expedition, and the sleeping area is a rectangle rather than a shape interrupted by a seatback. You also keep the cab as a separate room for gear.

An SUV gives you a sealed box. It is insulated, it can be heated by the vehicle's own system before bed, it locks from the inside, and it does not require you to buy anything to become weatherproof. A truck bed requires a topper, a shell, or a tent before it is any of those things - which is a real cost, in money and payload: shells that make a truck bed weatherproof covers what that purchase involves.

The honest summary: if you are over six feet, a standard-box truck plus a shell is the geometry that works. If you camp in cold, wet, or unfamiliar places, an SUV you already own is a better starting point than a truck you have to modify.

If your vehicle is too short

Three fixes, in ascending order of effort, with the failure mode for each.

  1. Sleep diagonally. Costs nothing and buys real length, because the diagonal of a rectangle is longer than its side. In a cargo area 70 inches long and 43 inches wide, the diagonal is about 82 inches. Fails when there are two of you: two diagonals do not fit in the same rectangle, and you end up sharing a much narrower usable width.
  2. Build a platform over the folded seats. A flat deck at the height of the folded seatback ignores the slope, the gap, and the floor lip in one move, and gives you storage underneath. Fails when the ceiling is low: every inch of platform is an inch less sitting height, and in a mid-size SUV you can end up unable to sit up at all.
  3. Extend forward into the footwells. Slide the front seats forward and bridge the gap behind them. This is the cheapest way to find six to eight inches. Fails when you need the driver's seat in a usable position, and it makes leaving in a hurry genuinely difficult - worth thinking about if you sleep anywhere you might need to move.

How long does the cargo area need to be for someone 5 ft 10 in?
About 72 inches. A 5 ft 10 in person is 70 inches tall, and you need a couple of inches of clearance at the head and feet so you are not braced against the tailgate all night. For 6 ft 2 in, budget 76 inches. Those are the thresholds used in the two tables on this page.
Which SUVs let an adult lie flat with the seats down?
Of the vehicles we could verify, the Ford Expedition (90.4 in behind the front seats) and the Subaru Outback (75.0 in) clear 72 inches on published figures. The Subaru Forester is 70.7 in, which is just short. We could not verify the 4Runner, RAV4, CR-V, Grand Cherokee, Suburban, Sequoia, or Pilot, because those manufacturers publish cargo volume in cubic feet rather than cargo length in inches. Note that all of these are floor-level figures measured to the folded seatback with the front seats in a standard position, so treat them as a ceiling rather than as usable length.
Which trucks have a bed long enough to sleep in with the tailgate up?
On published bed length at the floor, the 8 ft boxes clear it easily (F-150 at 97.6 in, Tundra 8.1 ft at 96.5 in), and the standard boxes clear 74 inches: F-150 6.5 ft at 78.9 in, Tundra 6.5 ft at 77.6 in, Ram 1500 6 ft 4 in box at 76.3 in. The Tacoma's 6 ft bed is 73.5 in, which clears a 5 ft 10 in sleeper but not a 6 ft 2 in one. Every 5 ft class bed is too short to lie straight with the tailgate up.
Is a truck bed or an SUV interior better for sleeping?
A truck bed gives you more length and total separation from the cab, but no insulation, no climate control, and no security unless you add a shell. An SUV gives you a sealed, lockable, heatable space, but the sleeping area is shorter, interrupted by the folded seatback, and narrower at the wheel wells. If you are tall, the truck wins on geometry. If you camp in cold or wet weather, or you want to be able to lock the door from inside, the SUV wins on everything else.
Can I sleep in a mid-size SUV, or do I need a full-size?
Diagonally, yes, for most people. Straight, usually not: the Forester's 70.7 in is representative of the class, and it falls short of the 72 in a 5 ft 10 in sleeper wants. The three fixes on this page - sleeping diagonally, building a platform over the folded seats, or extending into the footwells with the front seats slid forward - all recover somewhere between two and eight inches, which is often the whole difference.
Why can't you give a cargo length for the 4Runner or the RAV4?
Because Toyota does not publish one. Manufacturers report cargo capacity in cubic feet, and the SAE-coded length field is simply empty in the specification data for those models. Cubic feet cannot be converted back into a length, because the same volume can come from many different shapes. Rather than estimate, we left the cell empty and are asking readers with a tape measure to fill it in.

Every dimension on this page is a published specification, not a measurement we took. We have not slept in any of these vehicles and we have not put a tape measure in any of them. Where a manufacturer publishes the figure in a document of its own - Ford, Ram, and Toyota do for truck beds - that document is cited. Where it does not, the figure comes from the manufacturer-supplied SAE-coded data feed as surfaced on Car and Driver's specification pages, and that is stated in the source note. Seven of the ten SUVs we checked do not publish cargo length in inches anywhere we could find; those cells are empty. We did not derive them from cubic feet, because cubic feet cannot be converted back into a length.
